The darker side of New Year's celebrations. Three New York police officers were attacked near Times Square on New Year's Eve. The attacker used a machete to injure the officers. The police say it was an unprovoked attack.

The attack occurred at around 10:00 p.m.. The suspect has only been identified as a 19 year old male. The police say he approached an officer and tried to hit him over the head with the weapon. Suspect then struck two other officers before an officer shot his shoulder.

The suspect is being treated for his injuries. The authorities have said that the suspect was operating alone and that there is no ongoing threat to New Yorkers. And there are no credible threats to New Yorkers at this time.

Again, this attack took place outside of the area that the police department has identified as the area that we wanted to do primary focus on. And these officers responded in an amenable, professional manner.

And all the officers involved, and I must say that even after the incident took place, the responding officers made sure the scene was under control. The FBI and YPD and joined her task force are investigating the incident.

The investigation is in the preliminary stages, and authorities have not assigned a possible motive as of yet.
