Even yearend holiday season has failed to give a boost to smartphone sales globally. Global smartphone shipments suffered their worst quarterly drop on record in October December period. The smartphone makers have launched new handsets to attract buyers.
Experts say it is a clear sign of cooling consumer demand and there is going to be more pain for manufacturing hubs like South Korea and Vietnam. According to IDC data, smartphone shipments declined 18.3% in December quarter compared to a year earlier.
It is to a little over 300 million units for entire year of 2022, shipments were down 11.3%, it marked lowest total for a decade. One of the reasons for low handset sales was turmoil in Apple's main Chinese production base which may have disrupted shipments in the quarter.
