In January 2021, scientists from China announced that they had successfully grown plants, including cotton and rapeseed, in simulated lunar soil. This was done in an experiment conducted inside a sealed container in order to mimic the conditions on the lunar surface, such as lack of atmosphere, extreme temperatures and cosmic radiation. This is a significant milestone in the field of space exploration as it could pave the way for long-term human habitation on the moon. Growing plants in lunar soil could provide a source of food and oxygen for future lunar missions, and also to help understand the potential of lunar soil for agriculture. However, more research is needed to confirm the results and to determine if the plants grown in moon soil are safe for human consumption.
